Patrick Dewan Dies at Osgoode

A member of one of the pioneer families of Osgoode. and a well-known and highly respected resident of the Ottawa Valley district passed away yesterday in the person of Patrick Dewan, whose death occurred at his home at Osgoode. He was in his 86th year.

Mr. Dewan will be mourned throughout the district and by his friends in the Capital who were numerous, and who held him in the highest esteem. Bora 85 years ago, on the farm adjoining his present home, he was a son of the late Patrick Dewan and Mary McGee. His father came to Canada from Clonmel, Ireland, with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Maurice J. Dewan. who settled on a farm at Hog's Back.

At the time of his marriage to Miss McGee, Mr. Dewan‘s father moved to Osgoode, settling on a farm. At that time Osgoode was but a forest. It was on this farm, opened by his father, that Mr. Dewan, eldest son was born. He was engaged in farming all his life, and was also a well-known fire insurance agent. A devout member of St. John's parish, Osgoode. Mr. Dewan had the happy faculty of making friends.

Surviving are his widow, the former Ellen Blanchfield: three sons, Edmund Dewan, Ottawa; Bernard Dewan, Osgoode, and William Dewan, living on the homestead; five daughters, Miss Teresa Dewan, Ottawa; Mrs. Patrick McEvoy and Mrs. Thomas McEvoy, Osgoode; Mrs. Ambrose Kelly and Mrs. Earl McGuire, of Osgoode; two sisters. Mrs. William O'Brien and Mrs Thomas Shields, Osgoode. Thirty-six grandchildren also survive.

The funeral will be held from his late residence at Osgoode at 9.30 o'clock Thursday morning to St. John's Church for requiem high mass at 10 o’clock. Interment will be made at the parish cemetery.

The funeral of Patrick Dewan, a venerable pioneer of Osgoode, who passed away at the family home last Sunday, took place Tuesday to St. John’s church, where a solemn high mass of requiem was chantad by the Rev. Father McCauley. The cortege was very large. The pallbearers were Messrs. M. Doyle, J. O’Connor, N. Turner, W. Doyle, M. Daley and J. Shields Interment was made in St. John’s cemetery.

The late Mr. Dewan was born in Clonmel, Tipperary, Ireland, in 1820, and came to Canada with his parents in 1827. For the last sixty-six years he had been a resident of Osgoode, where by his kind and genial disposition he had won the high esteem of all. He leaves to mourn his loss a widow, four sons, Patrick and John, of Osgoode, Barnard of Assiniboia, Sask., and Joseph, of Minneapolis, Minn.; two daughters, Mrs. Wm. O’Brien and Mrs. B. Shields, Osgoode and three sisters, Mrs. M. Whelan, Ottawa. The deceased is also survived by thirty-one grandchildren and four great grandchildren, all of whom with the exeption of two reside in Osgoode. The sympathy of a large circle of friends is extended the sorrowing relatives.
