Former Osgoode Postmaster Dies

Postmaster at Osgoode for a number of years, before engaging in farming, Hugh Cleland died in hospital on Saturday, following a short illness. He was 72.

The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Cleland he was born and educated at Osgoode and resided there all his life. He married Gertrude Daley in Gloucester 45 years ago. Mr. Cleland attended St. John’s Church, Osgoode, and was a member of the League of the Sacred Heart, and the Holy Name Society.

Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Harold and Walter Cleland, both of Osgoode; six daughters, Rev. Sister Mary Anselm, with the Congregation of St. Joseph. Barry’s Bay, Rev. Slater Mary Loretto, with the Congregation of St. Joseph, Calabogie, Miss Gertrude Cleland, with the Department of Mines and Resources, Miss Irene Cleland, with the R.C.A.F. records office. Mrs. Lawrence Millar, and Mrs. Patrick Collins, all of Ottawa; and one sister, Mrs. Thomas Herbert, Detroit.

The body is at his residence, from where the funeral will be held on Tuesday, at 9.30 a.m. to St. John's Church, Osgoode, for solemn requiem mass at 10 o’clock. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

In St. John's Church, Osgoode, this morning at 10 o’clock, the marriage was solemnized of Lillian, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Boyd, to John, son of Mrs. Joseph Loughlin, Rev. E. Maloney officiating. Summer flowers adorned the church. Miss Leona McEvoy, Osgoode, played the wedding music and accompanied the soloists. Miss Mary Loughlin and Mr. Arnold Kelly.

Miss Agnes Nevins

The death of Miss Agnes Nevins, former, resident of Ottawa, occurred at her home in Osgoode Thursday night after an illness of two weeks.

A daughter of the late Nicholas Nevins and his wife Anne Stackpole. she was born in Osgoode and lived most of her life there, except for an interval of a few years spent in Ottawa. She returned to the family residence 12 years ago and had remained there since.

Surviving are three brothers, Michael P. Nevins, of Port Arthur, and Francis and Joseph, of Osgoode; and a sister, Miss Ruth Nevins, of Osgoode.

The funeral wlll be held from her Osgoode residence at two o’clock Sunday afternoon to St. John’s Church, Osgoode, for libera service at 2.30. Interment will be in South Gloucester cemetery. Requiem high mass for the repose of her soul will be chanted Monday morning at 10 o’clock in St. John’s Church.

J. J. Blanchfield Dies at Age 90

At the age of 90, John Joseph Blanchfield, retired farmer of Osgoode, died yesterday at his home, 453 Laurier avenue west, after a brief illness.

The late Mr. Blanchfield farmed in the Osgoode district for upwards of 50 years. He retired 12 years ago and came to Ottawa to live. He was unmarried.

He was born on May 22, 1855, son of the late Edward Blanchfield and his wife the former Anastasia Fitzpatrick. He was educated in Osgoode and while resident there, attended St. John’s Catholic Church. During his residence in Ottawa, he was a parishioner of St. Patrick’s Church. Surviving him are his brother, Thomas, and his sister, Catherine, both of Ottawa.

The funeral will be held at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, from McEvoy Brothers funeral parlors to St. John’s Church, Osgoode, for requiem mass. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Mrs. Catherine Doyle Dies in 87th Year

Mrs. Catherine Doyle, highly respected resident of Ottawa for the last 20 years, and a member of a well-known family in South Gloucester and Osgoode, died on Wednesday, at her residence, 102 James street, after a lengthy illness. She was in her 87th year.

Mrs. Doyle, who was born in South Gloucester, was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Foran, pioneer residents of that district. She was the widow of William Doyle, who died 24 years ago.

A member of St Patrick’s parish, she was identified with pariah activities, and was a member of the League of the Sacred Heart.

She is survived by five sons, James, Nicholas, L. Gladstone and William, of Ottawa; Thomas, of Montreal; three daughters, Mrs. M. A. Kelly, Misses Helen and Vera Doyle, all of Ottawa.

The funeral will be on Friday morning at 8.45 from the parlors of McEvoy Brothers. 235 Kent street, corner Nepean to St. Patrick s Church Solemn requiem high mass will be chanted at 9 o clock, by Msgr. G. D. Prudhomme. The body will rest in Notre Dame cemetery vault until Spring when burial will take place in St. Brigid's cemetery, River Road.

Rev. E. Maloney solemnized the marriage of Lillian Teresa, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gus McEvoy, to LAC. Archibald A. Sayant, R.C.A.F., son of Mrs. Sayant and the late Alex Sayant, in St. John’s Church, Osgoode, on Saturday morning at nine o'clock. Mrs. James Dewan played the wedding music.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride was attended by Miss Dorothy McEvoy, her sister, as bridesmaid, and Mr. Roddie Sayant, brother bf the bridegroom, was the best man.

Blanchfield, of Osgoode, Ontario, to Pilot Officer William Gerald Gillissie, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Gillissie, of Vernon, Ontario.

St. John's Church, Osgoode, was the scene of the wedding at 9.30 o’clock this morning of Mary Margaret Daley, daughter of Mr. Thomas Daley and the late Mrs. Daley, to James Austin, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Guilfoyle, of Farrellton, Que. Rev. E. Maloney officiated.

The bride was given in marriage by her father and was attended by her sister, Miss Rita Daley, as bridesmaid. LAC Emmett Guilfoyle, R.C.A.F., of Hagersville, was best man. Mr. Patrick Daley, brother of the bride, and Mr. Angus Guilfoyle, brother of the bridegroom, were ushers.

Mrs. William O’Brien Dies at Age of 97 Years

Requiem mass was chanted at nine o'clock this morning in St. Patrick’s Church, Ottawa, for Mrs. William O’Brien, who died on Thursday at the residence of her son Joseph, 477 Lisgar street. Mrs. O’Brien would have been 97 years had she survived until November 23 next. She was a member of a family which had been among the earliest settlers along the Rideau River in North Gower. Before her marriage to William O’Brien, who predeceased her, she was Brigid O’Brien. After living some time in North Gower and Ottawa she went to reside in New York. Fifteen years ago she returned to live in Ottawa.

Despite her great age she enjoyed remarkable health until recently and followed world events with lively interest until the end. Almost to the time of her death she could read a newspaper without glasses. She possessed a kindly, attractive personality and a wide circle of friends mourn her passing.
Mrs. O'Brien is survived by four sons, John and Thomas O'Brien of New York, Joseph O'Brien, of New York and Ottawa; Frank O'Brien, of Bridgeport, Conn., and three daughters, Mrs. Geo. Bechtel (Teresa), Rev. Sister Thecla, Chicago, and Rev. Sister Narcissus, Houch, Arizona. The funeral was held on Sunday from the parlors of McEvoy Brothers Kent street, to St. Patrick’s Church for Libera service. Burial was in St. Brigid's parish cemetery, River Road. Rev. E. Maloney, P.P., Osgoode, recited the prayers at the graveside.
